Stuttering in Teens and Adults

Why does stuttering persist in teenagers and adults?

Unfortunately, many teenagers and adults who stutter never received adequate therapy services during their childhood. Years ago, it was common practice for physicians and speech language pathologists to assure parents of children who stuttered that they did not need help. Guidelines to qualify for services in school speech programs varies, and some individuals have little or no experience treating childhood stuttering.

Unfortunately, misinformation about stuttering still prevails today. New research has determined that it’s no longer considered appropriate to “wait and see” if you suspect stuttering symptoms are present in a child, teenager or adult. It is recommended that individuals seek the advice of a licensed speech language pathologist who specializes in stuttering whenever symptoms are evident.

What are some potential risks when teenagers or adults stutter?

Individuals who are naturally outgoing may hide their true personalities and avoid talking due to the potential embarrassment of stuttering. Individuals may be incorrectly labeled as shy, quiet or less intelligent due to limited verbal speech. Employment opportunities and personal relationships may be affected as a person tries to hide their stuttering. Individuals who are anxious, depressed, or isolated may seek relief from stuttering through risky behavior, abuse of alcohol, or self-medication. Without the benefit of professional guidance, the skills and talents of individuals who stutter may not be fully appreciated.

Everyone has the right to be heard, and options for relief exist. Knowledge is power. Once individuals obtain quality services, life becomes easier, and stuttering is finally treated appropriately.
